THERE should be more prawns on the barbie this summer, with a government initiative designed to boost stocks of the seafood.
About 4 million juvenile eastern king prawn larvae are being released along the NSW coastline in 10 estuaries from Taree in the north to Eden in the south.
"Fish stocking boosts our fishing communities, as recreational angling supports businesses and tourism," said Minister for Primary Industries Katrina Hodgkinson, who released prawns at Narrabeen Lagoon recently.
Ms Hodgkinson said catching prawns during the festive season was one of the great family pastimes.
"This new program will hopefully lead to it being even more enjoyable in the future," she said.
The prawns should be ready for harvesting in about three months.
