JOINING the NSW Police has given recruit Jessica Beckman two important things: a new career and a new love.
The probationary constable, 28, started her first week at St George area command in Kogarah with a mixture of nerves and excitement.
It's something she can share with her partner Adam Pank who also started at Miranda police station.
The pair were among 313 police recruits sworn in at an attestation ceremony last week.
Of those, 15 will be stationed at St George, seven at Miranda and eight at Sutherland.
The couple first met during a first-aid course as part of the Police Force application process.
As the only two police applicants in the room they bonded about their future careers.
Though she has just started as a policewoman this was a career she always wanted to pursue.
"I love investigating, so I've always wanted to join but I never had the guts to do it," she said.
"I just had a boring office job. It was at the end of 2011 that something snapped and I realised I needed to do something different with my life."
As a probationary constable she will stay with a training officer for the first eight weeks before she is assigned a duties partner.
"It's daunting but it'll be interesting to see how it all works in the real world."
