Why is St George and Sutherland Shire the best place in the world to live?
I have had the pleasure of living in the region my entire life. Born at St George Hospital, raised at Peakhurst and Hurstville, business in St George and Sutherland Shire and lived the past 35 years at Gymea Bay. I have continually seen the region grow in prosperity and great infrastructure.
What is one thing about the region that you would like to change?
Not to overdevelop, and maintain the natural beauty of the region. Improve sporting facilities, especially the various fields and Hurstville Oval.
Do you have a favourite spot you like to visit or a favourite local restaurant, cafe or shop?
There are many great restaurants: Stapletons at Sutherland, Summersalt at Cronulla, Bay Blu at Tom Uglys and many varying style restaurants at Gymea.
What do you enjoy reading the most in your Leader?
I am always passionate about keeping up with sport but I do read the paper from front to back.
Has any particular story you have read stuck in your memory?
The story on Albie Thomas, one of the great men of the region, after his death. A true gentleman and his story depicted his astonishing career.
What are you looking forward to this year?
Getting closer to the finalisation of the Cancer Care Centre. I and several good friends have been fund-raising to improve the facilities at St George Cancer Care Centre for the past 20 years. We have raised more than $9million and we are not far from completely upgrading the facility.
What is the best part of your role?
I have several businesses and it is always pleasing to see them succeed, but I enjoy being involved with my traditional sport of cycling and have been an executive member for 48 years and during this time have assisted many cyclists achieve world championship status and Olympic stardom.
What is one thing you wish you were better at?
Golf.
What is the best piece of advice anyone has given you?
My father always said ‘‘work will not kill you’’ and ‘‘always leave this Earth a better place’’. I love work and contributed significantly in ensuring the region has benefited from my efforts and dedication.
Where would you like to go on holidays?
Fiji.
