It is common to read critiques and concerns in Your View.
On this occasion however, I on behalf of the community and ShireBiz, where I am deputy chairman, congratulate and thank Sutherland Shire Council for their proactive and prompt response to our submission for trialing marked parallel car spaces, commencing in Cronulla.
ShireBiz has argued and by way of our recent community survey had community endorsement for the trialing of white line parking spaces being identified in busy areas and nearby transport hubs.
We have met with council officers, put forward the case along with ‘‘evidence’’ from the survey results and wish to praise council for its responses.
I am advised more than 30 ‘‘extra’’ spaces have been identified and marked in Coast Avenue and Ingalara Avenue, Cronulla.
Surf Road, Surf Lane, Laycock Avenue and Cronulla Street across from Cronulla station have had full council agreement and will be marked soon.
Assessment indications, identification of defined marked spaces in which to park will, in addition to providing more spaces, enable motor vehicles to be closer to the kerb.
It will provide more road space and be of benefit to cyclists, minimise vehicle parking over driveways, invite more responsible parking and reduce the perceived inefficiency of parking in busy areas, particularly in nearby transport hubs.
The cost and time to introduce these are by comparison to other options minimal.
Infrastructure, parking, transport and travel are all challenges in the shire.
It is a steep time process, so credit where credit is due to council and its proactive response.
