WOLLI Creek residents say their safety is being compromised because a major street for commuters lacks street lighting.
Resident Krissy Varga regularly walks along Mount Olympus Boulevard on her way to Wolli Creek railway station and says it is dangerous at night.
‘‘It’s not safe to walk there. We’ve had situations where people have been mugged and women threatened,’’ she said.
‘‘The only security you have is the light that comes from car headlights.’’
She moved to the area in 2008 and said it had been an uphill battle since then to have any kind of lighting installed.
Two years ago temporary floodlights were installed while a building was being built but now that’s finished the street is left in darkness.
She said she had contacted Rockdale Council numerous times but had been redirected to Ausgrid which told her the council was responsible for installing lighting and Ausgrid only maintained existing street lights.
‘‘They’ve (council) never explained why there’s no lighting,’’ she said.
‘‘As a ratepayer I would wonder what they are investing in.’’
A spokesman said Rockdale Council was looking to improve the street lighting in a number of locations in Wolli Creek and had obtained approval from Ausgrid for upgrades.
‘‘The council is preparing to invite tenders for work early in the new year and expects to begin work in February or March,’’ he said.
He said Mount Olympus Boulevard would not be included in that tender but it would follow works done to Brodie Spark Drive and Magdalene Terrace.
