Miranda police were called to Cronulla Plaza at 8.30pm after reports of a fight between 20 people.
A female detective was assaulted as she attempted to stop the brawl and was taken with facial injuries and bruising to St George Hospital.
Six people from the Liverpool region were arrested and four were charged.
A 13 year-old girl, Angel, who was with one of the groups, told Fairfax Media that the fight started when a group of older boys made a call at her group of friends, inciting them to fight.
She said they were passing through the mall on their way to the station.
"They were just being smart to one of the boys, they were just saying stuff that got the boys angry," she said.
She said that the two groups were about to calm down and separate when a passing undercover police officer intervened and called for back up.
She said the presence of the police further incited the two groups and the situation worsened. She admitted that most of the people involved had been drinking.
She said her group had come from Liverpool to Cronulla to spend Wednesday at the beach. At one point during the day, they were suspected of stealing from a local store and police searched their bags on the beach.
