An eight-year-old girl was pulled unconscious from the water at Dolls Point yesterday — at the same spot where five-year-old Ayman Ksebe drowned 12 months ago.
Emergency services were called at 5.20pm to the beach near St George Sailing Club after two young girls began to struggle.
The pair were swimming near a sandbar and were being watched by family on shore.
The first girl was rescued.
Police and family attempted CPR on the eight-year-old before paramedics and CareFlight doctors arrived.
It is believed the girl had been unconscious for up to five minutes after she was pulled from the water.
She was taken in a stable condition to Sydney Children’s Hospital.
Carina El-Saouda launched a Facebook page and online petition to create awareness about the conditions at Dolls Point and Brighton beach after Ayman’s death.
‘‘It’s a major swimming beach but the conditions are so unsafe. You’ve got shifting sands, a big drop-off and rips,’’ she said.
‘‘If more isn’t done to fix the problem, more people are going to keep drowning there.’’
She said that although signs had been installed, it was not enough to stop people from swimming at the beach.
‘‘That section of the beach needs to be closed to swimmers and signs put up to make sure people swim in the baths instead,’’she said.
‘‘We also needs lifeguards patrolling the beach.
‘‘Thousands of people swim there in summer.
‘‘It doesn’t make sense for it to be unpatrolled.’’
It comes as St George police have asked a good samaritan to come forward.
The man rescued both girls from the water but left before police arrived.
Anyone with information on the man’s identity is urged to contact St George police station on 8566 7499.
