The ICC Cricket World Cup starts February 14 and Hazlewood, 24, from Bendemeer in NSW's New England region, will join Sutherland cricketers, Steve Smith and Shane Watson in the 15-man Australian squad.
Hazlewood joined the Saints six years ago and overcame setbacks, including stress fractures in his back, earlier in his career, to play for NSW and now Australia at Test level.
The right-arm speedster has taken 12 wickets in his first three Tests this summer against India.
"I thought I was a pretty good chance of making the World Cup squad," Hazlewood told the Leader.
"I am happy I made it."
Hazlewood said his parents, Anne and Trevor, and siblings, Casey, 28, and Aaron, 26, had been very supportive throughout his career and came along to the Test matches against India.
Hazlewood said the St George club had been a great influence on his cricket and his life generally.
"The club has been good to me. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to play for them as much as I would like with playing first class cricket for NSW and Australia," he said.
St George Cricket Club president Kevin Greene said Hazlewood had a good work ethic and deserved his place in the World Cup squad,"
Hazlewood said he was looking forward to the World Cup but before that was preparing for the upcoming one day triangular series between Australia, India and England starting this Friday at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
