Sutherland Shire Council needs a six-month trial of not sweeping our streets to find out what will happen.
It is hard to not criticise the council for their complete lack of common sense.
I live on Bates Drive/Carvers Road and like a large amount of roads in the shire, if the council hasn't noticed, they are heavily tree-lined.
This road was street swept at least once every two weeks for years. This stopped early 2014.
Gutters and drains choked within a month. In heavy rain water flowed across the roadway in large volumes. Not to mention road flooding.
When I rang the council about this I was told that their street sweeper fleet had been reduced from five to two due to, in her words, three of the heavy street sweepers breaking down and going to God! And replacements were not being ordered.
The workload on the remaining two sweepers was very high.
It took a further two weeks for my street to be swept.
That was in October 14 and the street has not been swept since.
All I can say to the council and mayor Kent Johns is: 'Don't treat the residents as fools'.
We care about the environment we live in.
This was about cost, lack of a replacement scheduling and bad management.
Set a high standard for the shire, the management of it and don't drop the ball again!

Do you think the six-month trial of more street sweeping is a good idea?
