BULLDOZERS are expected to move in by the end of the month to start work on the $23 million Oatley railway station upgrade and 100-space commuter car park.
Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian and Oatley MP Mark Coure said a contract had been signed and the project would get under way soon.
Ms Berejiklian said the project was being delivered as part of the state government's Transport Access Program, providing accessible, modern, secure and integrated transport infrastructure where it was needed most.
"The improvements planned for Oatley station will ensure that all our customers, including people with disabilities, the elderly, passengers with prams or luggage and young children, can easily access public transport," she said.
Ms Berejiklian congratulated Mr Coure for his tireless work getting the project started.
Mr Coure said the community would benefit from an overhead footbridge, connecting both Oatley Parade and Mulga Road to the platform via new stairs and lifts, and redesigned station forecourts and landscaping.
"A commuter car park extension providing approximately 100 spaces is also being delivered as a part of the station accessibility upgrade and that is such a fantastic win for customers who are turning up to the station looking for a car park," Mr Coure said.
"I know this upgrade will make a real difference for local residents and will help encourage more people to choose public transport."
Planning approval for these improvements was received late last year, following consideration of community feedback.
"I thank everyone for their valuable feedback during the consultation process and we are now getting on with delivering this upgrade for Oatley customers," Mr Coure said.
Mr Coure reminded Narwee residents that an upgrade of Narwee station was announced in 2014.
"Improvements for customers could include a family accessible toilet and ramps, as well as lift access, improved customer information and signage, stairs and upgrades to lighting and CCTV," he said.
"This work is in addition to the transport interchange upgrade we completed at Narwee in September 2011.
"Customers are already benefiting from better bus stops, a kiss-and-ride zone and taxi zone with shelters on Penshurst Road South, new bicycle facilities and improvements to footpaths through the pedestrian subway."
Is this a case of "about time"?
