North Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club outlines two-storey extension plan

Christened Project Phoenix, the plan involves the demolition of the club’s existing single-storey building and construction of a new building with a basement and two levels above ground.

The project will create a space that can be leased commercially to provide ongoing income for the 90-year-old club, and an upgrade of club and public areas.

The club has released details to Sutherland Shire Council which owns the land and is seeking comment.

A presentation will be made by the club to the council’s special infrastructure projects and works committee.

Proposed works would include demolition of the existing single-level building, a new double-width driveway through the park along the western edge of the pool, new public amenities, lifeguard patrol room, surf club patrol room, kiosk, storage area, and new foyer and reception area with lifts.

The first floor would include a restaurant and function room.

The proposed development does not meet the council’s current plan of management for the area which would need to be amended and exhibited publicly if the plan is to go ahead.

Although the majority of the work would be outside the footprint of the original heritage clubhouse, the connection and impact of the new building to the old building would need to be considered.

The proposed driveways, loading area and new public utilities would increase the footprint of the club and extend into Dunningham Park.

The council’s report said the club building would benefit from an upgrade and this would enable it to serve the community better.

‘‘The challenge is to find a balance between allowing the club to expand its facilities and incorporate a commercial income producing component into the building, and not unreasonably impacting  on broader public enjoyment of a highly used public space,’’ the report said.
