ST GEORGE and Sutherland Shire surf lifesavers have praised the actions of the majority of beachgoers, with no drownings recorded in the district so far this summer season.
It comes as figures released by the Royal Life Saving Society Australia show 51 people drowned nationally since the start of December.
In Sydney alone there were 28 serious incidents.
Sutherland Shire Council beach operations manager Brad Whitaker said beachgoers had been generally well-behaved.
"We have had a few significant rescues in recent weeks but so far the season has been on par with previous years," he said.
"Importantly we haven't had any incidents happen within the flags."
Earlier this month a bodyboarder had to be rescued from North Cronulla beach after he fell off his board. He suffered suspected spinal injuries.
This follows another incident when a father and son had to be rescued from Cronulla beach.
Mr Whitaker said those events served as a reminder to obey instructions from lifeguards.
"It's very important that people swim between the flags and be aware of the beach conditions.
"If you're unsure you can ask one of the lifesavers on duty."
