SUTHERLAND has cemented a place in the Sydney Cricket Association first grade competition top six with a solid win over Sydney University last Saturday at Glenn McGrath Oval, Caringbah.
The home team reached 6-297 with opener Adam Whatley top-scoring with 54, and wicketkeeper Daniel Rixon unbeaten on 53.
Batting first in searing heat, the batsmen applied themselves well on their home wicket in the 50-overs-a-side game. In a tight finish, the students were dismissed for 287.
Spinner Daniel Fallins took 3/66 and Nathan Fitzgerald finished with 2/61; Jack Leaning finished with 2/29.
The run home to the finals is an interesting battle with Sutherland now at fifth on 36 points.
Sutherland play UNSW at 10.30am on Saturday and Sunday at Glenn McGrath Oval, Caringbah.
St George in touch
A much-needed win by St George thanks to a mighty 147-run opening partnership from Stewart McCabe and skipper Trent Copeland set the tone for the Saints' victory over Sydney last Saturday at Drummoyne Oval.
Saints scored 244 in the 50-overs-a-side game before dismissing Sydney for 180.
Copeland made 87 and fellow opener Stewart McCabe, the left-hander, clouted 59.
McCabe then turned to his bowling skills taking 5/46 with leg-spin, in a mighty all-round performance.
The victory has taken the Saints into 10th position with 25 points.
"We need to keep winning in the run home to the finals," St George Cricket Club president Kevin Greene said.
"It's a very tight competition and many of the teams are evenly matched.
"The weather will be critical this weekend."
Saints host Campbelltown-Camden at 10.30am on Saturday and Sunday at Hurstville Oval.

Sutherland first grade cricket team is making a bold bid for this season’s Sydney Cricket Association semi-finals.
A crucial win over Sydney Uni on Saturday at Glenn McGrath Oval elevated the team into fifth place on 36 points.
The SCA’s finals series involves the top six teams and Sutherland are poised to make a big tilt for the premiership in their 50th anniversary season.
Sutherland made 6-297 in the limited overs win and dismissed Sydney Uni for 287.
Sutherland opener Adam Whatley made 54 and wicketkeeper Daniel Rixon was unbeaten on 53.
Sutherland next play UNSW on Saturday and Sunday at Glenn McGrath Oval.
