WEDNESDAY, 5:10pm: The Department of Fire and Emergency Services are asking members of the public to avoid the area where the bushfire is burning in their latest update on the Glen Iris bushfire.
A bushfire watch and act remains for people in an area bounded by Vittoria Road, Jeffrey Road, Woodley Road and east to Willenge Drive.
South Western Highway is now reopened however, Willenge Drive is still closed.
The bushfire is stationary within containment line however, it is not under control. There are 64 career and volunteer firefighters from Capel, Dardanup and Harvey on the scene battling the blaze consolidating containment lines as well as mopping up and patrolling the area.
The fire started on the eastern side of Ince Road and is burning slowly in a southerly direction towards South Western Highway. There is a possible threat to lives and homes as a fire is approaching the area and conditions are changing.
Residents in the area need to leave or get ready to actively defend. Burning embers are likely to be blown around your home.
What to do
- If you are not prepared or you plan to leave, leave now if the way is clear.
- There is ember attack ahead of the fire, so close all doors and windows, and turn off evaporative air conditioners, but keep water running through the system if possible.
- If you are well prepared and plan to actively defend your home, make final preparations now.
- Do not rely on mains water pressure as it may be affected. If you have access to a water tank and plan to defend your home, start patrolling with your hose and put out spot fires.
- If you are not at home, do not try to return as conditions in the area could be very dangerous.
A bushfire advice has also been issued for the remaining parts of Glen Iris, south of Woodley Road to South Western Highway and north of Jeffrey Road to Australind Bypass.
Although there is no immediate danger for people in these areas they need to be aware and keep up to date in case the situation changes.
WEDNESDAY, 4:00pm: Bunbury Mail photographer Ashley Pearce has explained what it was like at the scene of the bushfire this morning as he was capturing photos and videos of the blaze.
“I was one of the first on the scene and at first the fire crews seemed quite calm and the fire looked quite small,” Mr Pearce said.
“But then it took off.
“In the space of about 10 minutes the smoke was thick in the sky and it was marching towards Picton Primary School.”
Mr Pearce’s photographs show the fire came within 50 metres of the playground of the school which has been open since 1890.
