Cronulla Sharks under-20s player Jayden Walker was arrested in Cronulla on Australia Day after allegedly verbally abusing police and resisting arrest.
Miranda police said they approached Walker, 18, at 8.40pm on the Kingsway near Croydon Street after he was found with alcohol in an alcohol-free zone.
Police said he was warned after using offensive language and was arrested when he persisted with the abuse.
He was taken to Cronulla police station where he was issued with a field attendance notice for offensive language and resisting arrest.
He will appear in Sutherland Court on Februry 19.
The back rower started his career with the De La Salle Caringbah club before being selected for the Sharks SG Ball Cup under-18s team.
He played for the NSW Schoolboys open age side last year and was selected to play in the Australian Schoolboys tour of Britain before he withdrew because of injury.
Sharks CEO Lyall Gorman said the club wouldn't make a decision on Walker's future until after a court decision.
''This is a personal matter for the player to address,'' he said.
''We don't rush to judge until we know all the facts.
''We're not going to prejudge anything.''
