THE desire to help people in need is what has kept Di Saunders going for more than a decade.
Mrs Saunders, 55, of Woronora Heights, recently celebrated 10 years as a volunteer at Lifeline's Sutherland office.
She answers dozens of calls from across Australia every week from people needing support for a number of issues including relationship breakdowns and mental illness.
"I was in the time of my life where I wanted to put something back into the community," she said.
"I really wanted to put my energies into supporting people in need."
Mrs Saunders said volunteering had been a rewarding experience and encouraged others to get involved.
"It is quite rewarding after a four- or five-hour shift to feel you have made a difference in someone's life," she said.
"To give them some hope to keep going and just be there to listen and care.
"You're not always there to give a solution but to support and listen."
Lifeline Sydney and Sutherland received more than 7000 calls last year from people needing help.
