The 2015 Ohana Surf Classic Nipper carnival has been postponed.
The event, scheduled for Saturday at Elouera beach, has been called off because of massive swells.
Carnival organiser Brett Richardson said eight to 10 foot waves had pounded the beach on Friday morning, leading to an early decision to postpone the event.
“We just can’t put the Nippers out in those conditions,” he said.
“Some kids are travelling more than two hours from regions such as the Central Coast.
‘‘You don’t want them to come all the way down to find that the event has been cancelled.
“With those waves, the kid’s safety is a genuine concern and safety has to come first.”
As of noon on Thursday, 936 Nippers had registered for the carnival.
The carnival is now likely to be held on February 21 or February 28 but an official decision has not been made yet.
