PRELIMINARY work for the long-awaited skate park and synthetic hockey fields at Greenhills Beach is due to start this month.
The facilities are planned as the first stage of a 91-hectare sporting and recreation "mecca" on former sand mining sites.
A new roundabout in Captain Cook Drive, which was built by Sutherland Shire Council late last year, is entry to the site.
A council spokeswoman said infrastructure and geotechnical design problems that had delayed the start of the project had been resolved.
"Work is scheduled to commence this month," she said.
"The first step in the project will involve removing vegetation across the site and construction of an access road to stage 1B.
"Works will be completed by mid- 2015 which will enable construction to start on the skate park and synthetic hockey fields.
"Last year, the council constructed the Lindum Road roundabout, which will be the access road into stage 1A, which consists of playing field 1 and the skate park."
Australand and Breen Property are developing the facilities under an agreement with the council that allowed the companies to develop nearby housing estates.
Breen Property and the Holt family company Besmaw want to put more homes on old sand mining land, presently zoned industrial.
THE TIME LINE
The skate park was scheduled originally to open in November 2013.
A problem over a Sydney Water easement and negotiations between the council and the developers led to extended delays.
In June last year, the council said it hoped work would start the following month.
