It's getting dark too dark to see - I feel I’m knocking on heaven’s door...Bob Dylan might not have been talking about daylight saving but if you tried to surf today you know what I mean.
The 2/3 ft. East swell is still hanging around and if it wasn’t for the weak southerly that blew through at 6 am conditions would have been a lot nicer. Not that you could see until about 7am.
Imagine, if you will, what it will be like in a months time!
Swellnet is saying the swell will hang around this size for the next few days so there will be small waves to surf until it turns around to the Nor East-wind and swell.
There appears to still be only one bank on the beach and this won't change until the swell direction swings back to the south which must be soon, surely. There are so many kids surfing the Alley that Ross Marshall said it was worse than Snapper! Unless you saw Snapper yesterday and you couldn’t see the waves for the surfers.
The WSL circus is about to start if you want to get on and have a punt(no money involved) on the contest winners, log on to -prosurfpicks-join the Cronulla losers (code is 54321) and have some fun and try to beat Spongebrit.
After weeks of surfing in various divisions the 30th Anniversary of Surfest wrapped up with Alejo Muniz (BRA) taking out the Burton Automotive Pro and Ellie Brooks (QLD/AUS) taking top honours in the Burton Automotive Women’s Classic. The World Surf League (WSL) QS6000 men’s and QS1000 women’s divisions are the blue ribbon events at Surfest and saw hundreds of Newcastle’s surf fans braving the rain, wind and weather to watch some of the world’s best surfers putting on a show.
Muniz celebrated his 25th birthday by taking out the Final of the Burton Automotive Pro over Jack Freestone .The 35 minute Final was full of fireworks with pulsing swell providing the perfect stage for these two exciting surfers to show what they’re capable of. Muniz started slow, but waited for the biggest and best waves and unloaded explosive and exciting turns to take home the prestigious Mark Richard trophy.
“It’s my birthday today so this feels extra special,” Muniz said. “It also feels amazing because two years ago I finished 2nd to Parko here and now I was able to win.
Connor O’Leary is sitting in 65th place on the WSL rankings and Jared has made the third page on 137th.
The Roxy Pro Gold Coast, the opening event of the 2015 World Surf League (WSL) Samsung Galaxy Championship Tour gets underway on Saturday. Not only will the season opener see reigning six-time Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) lead the world’s best female surfers, it will also play host to the first Heritage Series of 2015.
Fierce rivals and true legends of the sport Lisa Andersen (USA) and Layne Beachley (AUS) will face-off on Australia’s Gold Coast during the inaugural women’s Heritage Series. The pair holds a staggering 11 World Titles between them and this heat will be a rematch of their 2000 Final at Snapper Rocks, when Beachley defeated Andersen en route to claiming her third world title.
Reigning World Surf League (WSL) Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) has landed in Australia and will lead the world’s best surfers this coming week at the opening stop of the season, the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by BOQ.
The Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, where Medina was victorious last season at the start of his momentous year, boasts the added importance of 50% of the winners over the past decade going on to claim that year’s world title.
Medina’s 2014 title run was historic in that he became the first Brazilian to claim the world surfing crown in the sport’s near-40-year history and the first 20-year-old to do so since sporting icon Kelly Slater (USA) in 1992.
Eight VEGEMITE SurfGroms will be special VIP guests to the Gold Coast next Saturday where they will get a chance to meet and surf with some of world’s top surfers at Snapper Rocks. Quiksilver and Roxy are a proud partner of the VEGEMITE SurfGroms program and will give the kids an experience dreams are made of.
VEGEMITE SurfGroms is the world-first national junior surfing program which offers 5-12 olds an opportunity to develop strong ocean awareness and beach safety skills, while also developing a proficiency in surfing.
More than 35,000 children across Australia have enjoyed the program since it started in October, 2011.
Cronulla will be represented by Olivia Herman (9 - Lilli Pilli, NSW - Surfing Cronulla Surf School)
And finally in my favourite subject: The International Surfing Association (ISA) has welcomed Lithuania and US Virgin Islands as its newest Member Federations, further driving the development of Surfing around the world. Global development is a key element of the ISA's strategy and the consistent growth and reach amongst young people is a driving force behind the ISA's ambitions of making Surfing an Olympic sport.
Dream on!
