WORONORA Heights half-basketball court will be turned into a multi-use recreational hub.
A $265,000 upgrade will provide safer surfaces for skateboarding, BMX bikes and scooters.
Since the half-basketball court in Willaroo Avenue was built more than 20 years ago, the court surface has become degraded due to skateboarding, which it was never designed for.
Work will start next month on new surface pavement laid on the whole area to reduce noise and increase safety.
New walls and boxes will be added so the space can be used in a variety of ways and a basketball hoop will be installed with line marking.
New landscaping works, bubbler and bins will be added and new trees planted to provide shade on the spectator embankment.
Fencing will be built to provide privacy and a noise buffer for neighbours.
A boom gate will be installed in the car park to prevent the area being misused after hours.
Solar lighting was installed in the car park in the past 18 months to provide additional lighting and allow increased visibility in the area at night.
Sutherland Shire mayor Kent Johns said the upgrade was the outcome of an extensive community consultation process with Woronora Heights residents over the past few years.
"This project will breathe new life into some tired, existing recreation infrastructure and will enable it to meet a wide range of needs for the young people of Woronora Heights and the surrounding area," Cr Johns said.
"Parents and children told the council they wanted recreational facilities in their suburb, rather than having to travel to neighbouring suburbs.
"The new design will deliver better facilities while ensuring that neighbouring residents are protected from increased activity and any associated noise."
Work is expected to be completed in June.
