SUTHERLAND Shire Council will send MPs in the area a wish-list of major roads it says need urgent attention under a state government funding program.
Councillors resolved at the February 9 full council meeting to adopt a mayoral minute calling for a list of roads needing urgent attention to be forwarded to state MPs for consideration under the state government's Gateway to the South program.
Mayor Kent Johns said in the mayoral minute he had been advised by state MPs Lee Evans (Heathcote), Melanie Gibbons (Menai) and Mark Speakman (Cronulla) that the government had allocated $300 million in the road program for the A1, A3, A6 and F6 corridor.
"I understand consideration for funding will be given to other hot spots which lead into these roads," Cr Johns said.
"Whilst all are not in the Sutherland Shire, they are all roads used by shire residents so the announcement of the availability of the funds is welcome.
"With continuing urban growth and more vehicles using the road system, travel times and delays on major roads through the shire are ever increasing.
"With a number of key intersections already at capacity during peak periods and the future of the F6 corridor yet to be determined, it is timely for the state government and Transport for NSW to undertake detailed scoping of measures to introduce significant additional capacity into the shire's existing state road system."
Cr Johns said priority funding needed to go to:
■ Intersection upgrade of Captain Cook Drive and Taren Point Road, Caringbah;
Princes Highway, Kirrawee, from Acacia Road to Bates Drive, including key intersection upgrades at Princes Highway and Acacia Road/Grand Parade; Princes Highway and Oak Road; Princes Highway and Kingsway and Princes Highway and The Boulevarde, Kirrawee.
■ River Road, Linden Street and The Grand Parade, Sutherland.
He said potential solutions should include detailed investigation of tidal flow options along these routes.
