ROCKDALE residents will raise their concerns about the closure of Target at a special meeting on Tuesday.
Rockdale Chamber of Commerce president Allan Wight said the chamber organised the event to address concerns about the future of the site.
"The idea is to give people as much information as possible so we are as prepared as we can be by November," he said.
Mr Wight will moderate the discussion and will be joined by Rockdale Council's manager of strategic asset management, Michael McCabe, and consultant development manager, Jeff Appel.
Earlier this month, Target confirmed it will close its Rockdale store in November.
"We have taken the difficult decision to close our Target Rockdale store when the lease expires in November this year," a spokesman said.
"Unfortunately, the store has been under-performing for some time now and it's no longer financially viable for us."
Mr Wight said he had been contacted by business owners and residents concerned about what the decision would mean for the city centre.
"A lot of business owners are apprehensive about having a significant retailer move from within the town centre," he said.
"They want to see more vibrancy in the city so Target's decision has been an unfortunate change."
Rockdale Council owns the site but has a 50-year lease with Plaza Apartments Pty Ltd which expires in 2024.
Under the Rockdale town centre master plan adopted in 2012, the site is earmarked to be redeveloped into a new town square in Bryant Street and a food market, forming the necessary link between the civic precinct and King Street precinct.
Meeting details: Tuesday, March 3 at 5.30pm at Rocky's RSL, 45 Bay Street, Rockdale.
