Hundreds of police officers and firefighters lined Montgomery Street, Kogarah, today to farewell retiring Detective Inspector Raf Ajaka.
People watched as Inspector Ajaka walked through rows of saluting officers on his last day after 33 years with NSW Police.
He began his career as a 25-year-old at Flemington police before going to Auburn, Hurstville, Kingsgrove, Redfern, State Crime and Kogarah.
He has investigated everything from frauds, murders, armed robberies, shootings and drug offences.
‘‘ I had always wanted to become a policeman just to be in a position where I can make a difference to the community,’’ he said.
‘‘Thirty three years in frontline policing is a long time.
‘‘It takes a toll on you but I loved just about every minute of it.
He made the decision to retire because of his health.
‘‘When you’ve given enough, I think you know it’s time to look after your own health and well-being,’’ he said.
He plans to go fishing and spending time with his family.
