Glenn Wheeler had woken from a coma and was making small steps towards recovery, his family said in a press statement on Thursday.
The much-loved TV and radio personality, 55, of Caringbah is in a stable condition at St George Hospital after being hit on January 31 by a vehicle as he rode his scooter at Woolooware.
He had surgery on his leg and pelvis and had been in a coma in the intensive care unit.
‘‘Glenn woke from a coma over the weekend and he is in the very early and delicate stages of resting his brain and other injuries,’’ the statement said.
‘‘He continues to show signs that he is with us and at times we feel he has not lost his sense of humour.
‘‘We know however that the road to recovery is very long and at times at the request of ICU medical staff, we need to allow him time to rest and so we need to keep his visitors to a minimum.
‘‘Once he has progressed further, we will encourage those close to him to come and see the great man and spur him on in his recovery.’’
The female driver, Deborah Levy, 59, was charged with negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and will appear in Sutherland Court on April 2.
