Sutherland Shire Council will give $1 million towards reconstructing the Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club building.
Club management, which proposes a significant reconstruction of the existing clubhouse, had said the present heritage-listed building was not suitable for the club’s ‘‘future needs’’.
Mayor Kent Johns broke the news in a mayoral minute at the council meeting last night.
He said funding would come from the council’s 2016-17 budget.
“The council’s contribution will be on the understanding that the club will provide a study which will identify all other capital funding sources for the project.’’
It's the second surf club that has approached the council about redeveloping its clubhouse.
The council had resolved in February to form a working party to look at the North Cronulla Surf Life Saving redevelopment including improving and expanding its facilities next to Dunningham Park, Cronulla, and having talks with the state government regarding extending the club lease.
