THE state government's WestConnex road project was given a resounding thumbs down at a recent meeting organised by Wolli Creek Preservation Society at Earlwood.
Except for one dissenter, 150 people rejected any government investment in the project, calling instead for priority to be given to public transport and preservation of bushland and other green space.
Society spokesman Peter Stevens said people were concerned that they would have no say in the route decision or the location of emission stacks.
"There is no information on where tunnel boring will occur, where portals and ramps will be and whether homes will be resumed,"Mr Stevens said.
"Also at stake is part of the regionally significant Wolli Valley bushland, threatened with destruction under previous RTA proposals."
Mr Stevens said other concerns included health effects of exhaust stacks, details of ALP policy and whether alternative proposals had been provided to the parties.
He said that in the state seats surrounding Wolli Creek, only the Greens rejected the WestConnex project outright and supported substantially increased investment in public transport.
Mat Hounsell, of community group NoW Public Transport, outlined the links between WestConnex and the government's Urban Activation Precincts program and said high-rise development was likely along the Illawarra line corridor, affecting Banksia, Arncliffe and Turrella.
Gavin Gatenby of EcoTransit Sydney said it was crazy policy to spend $15 billion on a massive tollway system for a handful of peak-period motorists.
"Commuters are turning to public transport in unprecedented numbers and our rail system is bursting at the seams in the peaks," he said.
"For a fraction of the cost of WestConnex we could build a public transport and freight rail system that would cause a dramatic fall in road traffic."
A word was omitted in a report in Tuesday's Leader about the operation of a drilling rig at Brighton-Le-Sands for the WestConnex project.
The story should have read there was "no correlation" between drilling locations and potential ventilation sites.
