An enclosed pedestrian bridge with a lift at each end features in a proposed major upgrade of Jannali railway station.
Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian said, with other improvements, including ramps, improved lighting and security cameras, it would ‘‘look like a new station’’.
The pedestrian bridge, which would cross the tracks near the present entrances to the station, would save travellers and shoppers having to use the nearby road bridge.
Ms Berejiklian, accompanied by Liberal candidate for Miranda Eleni Petinos, said concept plans had been prepared for the project which was expected to cost ‘‘tens of millions of dollars’’.
‘‘If we are successful at the election, we will put these plans out in detail for community consultation and an environmental impact statement,’’ she said.
‘‘We know from experience in other parts of the network that communities offer us feedback.’’
Ms Berejiklian said Jannali met all the criteria for stations that should be ‘‘next on the list’’ for an access upgrade.
Factors included population growth in the area.
Ms Petinos said if the government was re-elected, the project would be completed in the next four-year term.
‘BETTER’ TIMETABLE
Gladys Berejiklian defended the 2013 timetable changes, which cut services to Jannali station.
She said the new timetable had provided a big increase in services on the Illawarra line, and Jannali station users had benefited from less overcrowding and more consistent services.
Four services were cut between 7am-8am, with an overall reduction of two services during the 6am-9am peak.
