Pedestrians at risk
There was another pedestrian knocked down last week by a car at the Kareela Shopping Centre as a result of no safety crossing at Freya Street.
It has been more than two years since this centre has had ongoing renovations.
And yet there is still no safety crossing.
Numerous letters and phone calls have been made to councillors and engineering staff without even an acknowledgement from most of them.
Even representation from my local member has been stonewalled by Sutherland Shire Council.
The last response from the council general manager was that a pedestrian crossing would be too dangerous.
Figure that one out.
But a safety refuge will be installed at the completion of the centre (maybe another six months or more) that is a concrete strip where you can stand in the centre and hope no car hits you.
What about schoolchildren and mothers and prams and the elderly crossing?
Is there much difference between this crossing and the one at Oyster Bay?
There has already been a death at this centre before.
Do we have to wait for another?
What then is the purpose of the council's safety and traffic committee.
Police monitoring of the speedsters along Freya Street would also help.
