MIRIAM Greenbaum, 20 of Blakehurst, is happy to call herself a musical nerd — and there are facts to substantiate that claim.
Every year since she was 10 the university student has auditioned with more than 650 to receive her place among the 444-strong Sydney Youth Orchestra (SYO).
On Saturday she will perform in the Flagship Sydney Youth Orchestra's concert, Legends of Past, at the City Recital Hall.
At the SYO she has been concertmaster, principal violinist and is now part of the SYO Flagship and Tango Oz orchestras.
Legends features five works performed by some of Australia's most gifted young musicians to mark the centenary of the Anzac legend.
The orchestra is made up of more than 70 musicians aged 15-24, with Greenbaum being one of the longest-serving members.
She started learning the violin with the Emanuel School music program.
Greenbaum was in the training orchestras, being concertmaster, section leader and learning ensemble skills.
Tango Oz is a SYO chamber ensemble playing traditional Argentinian tango.
Along the way she also sang with the Sydney Children's Choir and Gondwana Voices, which performed countless times at the Opera House and as well toured China and the US.
"I also learned to play the mandolin," she said.
