Traffic chaos at college
Twice daily on school days, hundreds of motorists taking students to Marist College, Kogarah converge on Dunmore Street, Bexley South.
Entry to the school for students is pedestrian only and from Washington Street, a no-through road.
Conditions in Dunmore Street very quickly become chaotic as available on-street parking is taken up by staff and students with cars. Traffic congestion leads to drivers using no-stopping zones, private driveways and nature strips to drop-off/pick-up students.
A number of students have P-plates and drive cars to school. Each school year, there is a group — usually in year 12 — who exhibit risky driver behaviour at nearby intersections.
They often drive in groups, revving, horn blowing and speeding.
"Call the police" is the response from Marist College, Kogarah.
Thursdays are particularly chaotic due to fleets of buses converging on Dunmore Street to ferry students to and from sporting activities.
Rockdale Council has provided bus zones for these events but there are bus drivers who persist in dropping off students in no-stopping zones at the corner of Dunmore and Washington streets — a risky practice, and illegal.
A co-ordinated approach by the relevant public authorities, supported by Marist College Kogarah, is needed to manage these traffic and parking issues.
