Two Barden Ridge residents were honoured with Volunteer Awards for Services to their Communities as part of Seniors Week recently.
Menai MP Melanie Gibbons presented Joyce Humphries, 84, and Hartley Giller, 100, both residents of Advantaged Care Barden Lodge, with their awards.
Mrs Humphries has been knitting trauma teddies for Sutherland Hospital for more than 20 years.
A great-grandmother who lived at Heathcote for more than 50 years, Mrs Humphries still knits three or four trauma teddies a week.
‘‘I don’t mind helping other people,’’ she said.
Mr Giller was a volunteer National Fishing Camp at Broken Bay for disadvantaged children.
A great-grandfather, Mr Giller turned 100 in January. He lived at Kogarah Bay and was principal of Bankstown Technical College, teaching electrical engineering.
He was also a member of the St George Sport Fishing Club and the Kyle Bay Bowling Club where he ran the Friday night bowls for many years.
Another gentleman, Noel Johnson, 89 was also to receive a volunteering award but passed away recently. Mr Johnson was a volunteer boxing instructor with the Sutherland PCYC for many years.
Ms Gibbons took time out of election campaigning to honour the contribution of Mrs Humphries and Mr Giller.
‘‘These people have done so much over the years they should be acknowledged,’’ Ms Gibbons said.
‘‘Through their example, we also hope to show the young what makes a community.
‘‘It’s up to them to take up the challenge now.’’
How important to do think the work of volunteers is to the community?
