Roselands shopping centre has earmarked its retail space for redevelopment but the owners have not made any decision on whether to add residential apartments.
The centre, owned by property developers and managers Federation (formerly Centro Properties) and Challenger, is working on a development application, although no formal plans have been concluded.
A Federation spokesman confirmed that the mall would be redeveloped.
Opened in 1965, it was once rated as the largest shopping centre in the southern hemisphere.
"It is one of our centres that will be redeveloped with a focus on expanding and upgrading the retail component, but the plans are in the early stages and at this stage no residential component has been discussed," the Federation spokes-man said.
Turning malls back into town centres with residential attached is becoming a trend.
It makes the malls service the surrounding community with not just the traditional apparel shops but offices, creches, bigger food courts and cinemas.
Having a residential component allows the malls to open longer and uses the non-shopping areas more.
