UPDATE: 1.45PM:
St George police said at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon that there were reports of multiple shots fired in the area, so police placed the TAFE campus into lockdown.
They searched buildings and several other areas. Several people from within the campus had reported the incident. Police said the noise was probably from a car backfiring.
St George commander Dave Donohue said: ‘‘while it was a mistake we are certainly happy to receive these calls and treat them seriously, rather than not respond to them’’.
EARLIER:
Police were called to the campus of St George College at the corner of Princes Highway and President Avenue Kogarah on Tuesday afternoon after reports of shots being fired.
St George police were notified after someone said they heard gun shots. They searched the area but said there was nothing to suggest shots had been fired.
The Montgomery Street campus was also cleared for about an hour.
Earlier reports via social media said the site was in lockdown and police had surrounded the TAFE. Several commented that the sound may have been a car backfiring.
Some students told the Leader that teachers had told them to go into a classroom with the lights turned off.
More to come.
