Lopping concern
I was walking in the formerly tree- studded Yarran Road, Oatley, and came across a hive of activity: four tree loppers, chain saws roaring, making short work of a beautiful gum tree. Within four hours, all that remained was a massive stump.
If I wish to make a change to my dwelling, I need to apply to the council for a permit. The council will publicise my plans, requiring me to post a sign on the property and they will generally write to my neighbours, giving them the chance to object if my proposal interferes with their lifestyle.
Before any tree is removed, why shouldn't the same rules apply? The council should be required to post a "proposed tree removal" notice on the tree four weeks before the work is planned to start.
If there is no objection from the community, start up the chainsaws, boys.
The council has a poor record of removing trees against community wishes but they should have nothing to fear if their decision is warranted. If not, we, the residents, will have the time and opportunity to question it.
