Woronora Memorial Park will hold its annual open day as part of the National Trust’s Heritage Festival on Saturday, April 11, from 10am to 3pm.
The cemetery’s chief executive officer Graham Boyd said the open day was a must for anyone with an interest in local history.
‘‘There are few better places to gain an insight into our past than at a local cemetery,’’ Mr Boyd said.
There will be many ways to explore Woronora’s extensive grounds and gardens which have more than 14,000 roses.
Regular bus tours will leave from the West Chapel Gazebo at the cemetery’s 1934 art deco crematorium.
There will also be a chance to take a behind-the-scenes guided tour of the crematorium.
‘‘We welcome the opportunity to demystify what goes on at a crematorium and these tours have proved surprisingly popular in recent years,’’ Mr Boyd said.
Visitors will also be able to tour the grounds and gardens of the cemetery on an Australian Cobb & Co Royal Mail coach.
The restored eight-seat coach will provide regular free rides in the grounds throughout the day.
And there are self-guided walking tours of the grounds.
A special guide map is available highlighting the cemetery’s important historical sites and new features and memorials.
There will be guided bus tours, a medieval combat and weaponry display and a sausage sizzle.
