A PROGRAM that helps disadvantaged young people gain independence has been expanded into Sutherland Shire.
The Learn to Drive mentor program is managed by the Come In Youth Resource Centre, which works with Project Youth to support those who are vulnerable and at risk.
Launched by the Greenlight Movement and based in Sydney's eastern suburbs, it gives people aged 16-25 supervised driving training at a reduced fee, to help them get their licence.
The program helped young people at risk of homelessness to gain the 120 hours of driving experience required to receive their provisional licence.
It works by pairing a young person with a community volunteer who helps them learn to drive in a supplied car.
Workers found the project encouraged more young people to actively participate in their communities through employment, education and social activities.
Youth ambassador Elle Dafkovski joined the program because she did not have anyone to teach her to drive or enough funds to pay for professional lessons.
"Having a licence has given me freedom, and the mentoring relationship helped me to build life skills, " she said.
Volunteers older than 25 who have held a manual licence for at least two years are welcome. Details: 9331 2691.
