A NEW community centre at Miranda is aiming to address the "missing link" between Aboriginal people and traditional health services.
The Bulbuwil Outreach Centre at Miranda Community Centre is open 10.30am-3pm each Monday for free health screenings such as blood pressure checks, and lifestyle activities.
It is run by South Eastern Sydney Medicare Local in conjunction with the local health district.
Indigenous resident Tom Avery, 66, of Miranda, said it was a good idea having a centre dedicated to helping Indigenous people. He visited the centre last month for the first time.
Bulbuwil lifestyle program officer Hollie Ballingall said it provided a meeting place for Aboriginal people who may be at risk of isolation.
Lifestyle programs include a walking group at Dolls Point, aquarobics at Sutherland and a gymnasium at Sutherland Hospital.
Local health district care co-ordination manager, Deb Kelly, said Indigenous people had provided feedback about wanting health support services outside of hospitals.
The centre is at 97 Karimbla Road, Miranda, near the train station.
