Free vaccinations for whooping cough are being offered to pregnant women in their third trimester by NSW Health, with evidence significantly showing it reduces the risk of newborns from catching the potentially fatal illness.
In babies, whooping cough can lead to much more serious health problems, including pneumonia and brain damage.
Whooping cough cases have been on the increase in NSW since the middle of 2014, with 501 cases reported in December last year.
