GRAHAM Bruce, 59, of Blakehurst, is among the residents being honoured at Sutherland Shire Relay for Life (May 2-3) at Sylvania Waters Athletics Track.
His wife Christine, 52, of Bangor, and their two daughters Olivia, 20, and Jessica, 18, have formed Dad's Dream Team to help raise $10,000 for the Cancer Council NSW.
Mr Bruce was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer nine years ago and is in a nursing home.
He is unable to speak, so he communicates by blinking and smiling.
Mrs Bruce said cancer had taken away her husband's ability to be by his daughters' sides as they celebrated life's milestones.
A poem written by Jessica about her dad includes the line: "You went to hospital and never came home."
"When you are at a relay, you realise there are so many stories that people have to tell," Mrs Bruce said.
"Everybody is there for their own individual reasons, but then you feel good that you've tried to make a difference to a degree."
Mr and Mrs Bruce met through their involvement in professional water-skiing and have been married 22 years.
Mr Bruce received the Queen's Scout Award in 1973 for his contribution to 1st Beverly Hills Scout Group.
The Calo family of Cronulla are also on the team. Its fundraising efforts are being supported by Vision Personal Training Bangor and Engadine.
The relay is aiming to raise $600,000.
