FORMER Dragons centre Mark Gasnier said Paul McGregor was the the coach to take the club forward and build again.
The Dragons missed the finals in 2012, 2013 and 2014 and Gasnier — who played in the club's 2010 grand final 32-8 win over the Sydney Roosters — said there were promising signs this season.
The class footballer retired from the NRL in 2011 after playing in the Dragons' 13-12 golden point semi-final loss to Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium.
Gasnier played 174 games for the Dragons.
Gasnier said McGregor — who has coached just 20 games in the NRL after taking over from Steve Price — has worked at developing the Dragons into a tougher unit this season.
"Paul McGregor is the right coach for the team," Gasnier told the Leader.
"He's a good coach and a good man.
"You can see there is light at the end of the tunnel now under McGregor.
"The team is playing well and their defence is good."
Gasnier works for Fox Sports as a commentator and analyst but still remains close to the Dragons, in a corporate capacity.
Gasnier said he would be at the game between the Dragons and the Broncos on Friday night at Jubilee Oval, Kogarah.
Former Dragons coach Wayne Bennett returns to one of his old stamping grounds.
He is in his second stint with the Broncos, who are leading the competition at this stage.
Bennett helped deliver the Dragons their first premiership as a joint-venture club in 2010.
Do you Dragons fans think McGregor is the man to rebuild the club?
