A 64-year-old man was arrested when police drug squad detectives intercepted a stash of kava in car outside Katherine on Thursday morning.
Superintendent Tony Fuller from the Drug and Organised Crime Division said police apprehended the man on the Stuart Highway, 10 kilometres north of Katherine at 7:30am on Thursday
Supt Fuller said police searched the vehicle and found approximately 10 kg of kava divided into 160 deal bags.
He said police then conducted a search at a Trower Road residence and a further 50 kilograms of kava was located, along with $17,000 in cash.
“Police will allege that the male was travelling to an East Arnhem community to sell the kava when he was arrested, " Supt Fuller said.
“If sold in remote communities, the total kava haul is expected to fetch up $100,000, " he said
The man is in custody assisting police with enquiries.
