THE names and service records of more than 2600 of Rockdale's World War I Diggers have been collated for the City of Rockdale First World War commemorative website.
WWI Rockdale Enlistees, a Google sites page, has been compiled by local amateur historian Charles Davis who has researched RSL honour rolls, local churches, the AIF Project of the University of NSW, State Library archives and digitised newspapers.
It contains information on Diggers who came from what was the old Rockdale Municipality at the time of World War I.
Areas include Arncliffe, Bexley, Kingsgrove, Sandringham, Sans Souci and some sections of Kogarah.
"The website is a doorway to lead people to the national archives and other sites to research their family connections to WWI Diggers. If they want to use it to go on their own investigations all the better," Mr Davis said.
Since the website launch in 2014 there have been several new additions.
"Links have been added connecting many service personnel names to contemporary newspaper articles, and were found in St George Call, The Sydney Morning Herald, Sydney Mail, etc.
"A Contributions and Supporters tab also lists the community individuals who have supplied information and/or memorabilia and photos.
Also listed are local and other entities that have linked the website to their (relevant) site including Rockdale Library, the Kingsgrove, Bexley, Brighton-Le-Sands RSL clubs, the War Memorials Register of NSW, The Harrower Collection, and WWI Link. Mr Davis described it as a living website and is always looking for new information on Diggers to be added.
"I firmly believe in the RSL creed of lest we forget. I don't want people to be forgotten," he said.
