Roseanne Barr, the US comedian who starred in her own self-titled sitcom in the late 1980s and 1990s, has revealed she is suffering from macular degeneration and glaucoma.
The condition will eventually leave her without sight, the 62-year old comedian revealed.
"You do what you have to do," Barr said. "I just try and enjoy vision as much as possible. You know, living it up."
Barr revealed the condition in an interview with The Daily Beast. It was subsequently reported in the wider US media.
Barr said there was "no time frame" for the loss of her sight, but that she was using marijuana to ease some of the pressure and discomfort of the condition.
"My vision is closing in now," she told The Daily Beast. "I read a lot, and then I thought, well, I guess I could hire somebody to read for me and read to me. But I like words, and I like looking."
The sitcom Roseanne aired between 1988 and 1997.
It starred Barr and John Goodman as the parents of three kids and despite its working class setting, is seen by many critics as a high benchmark in US television comedy.
Despite enduring affection for the show, Barr said it was unlikely it would return.
"I've thought about it doing it as a movie," she told The Daily Beast. "I don't know. I appreciate living life with no deadlines or stress. It's too hard. I don't know if I can do it again."
After Roseanne, Barr then fronted her own talk show, The Roseanne Show, which aired from 1998 to 2000. In 2005 she appeared in another show, Roseanne's Nuts, about her life on a farm.
Barr also briefly flirted with a political career, making two bids for presidential nomination, first for the Green Party and then the Peace and Freedom Party.
