The US television streaming service Netflix has confirmed it will revive the 1980s sitcom Full House.
The updated program, Fuller House, will pick up the story in the present day, with the teenage kids of the family as adults.
In the new series, Candace Cameron-Bure's character, DJ Tanner, is now the widowed and pregnant DJ Tanner-Fuller, living in San Francisco and working as a vet.
DJ's sister Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) is now an aspiring musician while DJ's best friend Kimmy Gibbler (Andrea Barber) is a single mother. In the opening episode, Stephanie and Kimmy will move in with DJ to help her manage her growing family.
Cameron-Bure, Sweetin and Barber all appeared in the original series and will reprise their characters for the Netflix-produced sequel.
The premise effectively replicates the opening premise of the original series, in which the widowed Danny Tanner (Bob Saget) lived with his brother-in-law Jesse (John Stamos) and best friend Joey (Dave Coulier), who helped him raise his kids.
A reboot has been in discussion for more than a year, but rumours that Netflix was poised to commission it surfaced a mouth ago, amid hand-wringing that the audience's appetite for classic TV show revivals was wearing thin.
Stamos is a co-producer of the reboot and will appear in the series as Jesse.
According to Netflix "discussions are ongoing" with Saget, Coulier, Lori Loughlin, who played Jesse's wife Rebecca, and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who played baby Michelle.
Netflix has not clarified if one or both of the Olsens might appear in the series; in the original Full House they were infants and, as it common practice in Hollywood, alternated playing one role, that of infant Michelle Tanner.
"As big fans of the original Full House, we are thrilled to be able to introduce Fuller House's new narrative to existing fans worldwide, who grew up on the original, as well as a new generation of global viewers that have grown up with the Tanners in syndication," Netflix's vice president of original content Cindy Holland said.
The original series producers Robert L. Boyett, Thomas L. Miller and Jeff Franklin will also return for the reboot.
The trio issued a joint statement which said they were "astounded" by the continued support for the series, decades after its original run.
"It is an honour and a thrill to catch up with these beloved characters and explore their lives today," they said. "The love you saw on the show was real. The cast has remained a loving family off screen all these years. We are as excited as our fans to finally bring Full House back to life."
The original series aired for 192 half-hour episodes between 1987 and 1995.
The sequel will air on Netflix in 2016.
