ROCKDALE City Suns won their first game of the season under caretaker coach and experienced player Paul Reid.
Just a week after replacing Branko Culina who parted ways with the club on Monday, the Suns defeated the powerful Sydney United 58 FC team 4-2 on Sunday night at Seymour Shaw Park Stadium.
Reid, an experienced footballer who played with Sydney FC in the A-League and with several clubs overseas, is filling in until the club’s board finds a permanent replacement.
Sitting last on the NSW men’s 1 competition table, the game was set down for Ilinden Sports Centre on Sunday afternoon.
But heavy rain forced the match to be switched to Sutherland Sharks FC’s home ground which has synthetic turf and is weatherproof.
Rockdale City Suns president Dennis Loether said the players responded well to what had been a tough week.
‘‘It was a great win by the club,’’ Loether said.
Marko Jesic scored twice and Alec Urosevski and Toufic Alameddine the other goals as the Suns, who were winless until Sunday night, could finally celebrate.
Rockdale City Suns and Sutherland Sharks FC now meet in a derby in the next round of the Football NSW Waratah Cup competition at Ilinden Sports Centre, on Wednesday, May 13.
Sutherland Sharks FC defeated Manly 3-1 at Cromer Park in their clash.
The Sharks are now sixth on 10 points and the Suns have now moved into 10th on five points.
In the NSW men’s 2 competition, St George FC’s game on the weekend was washed out.
But the Saints marched home last Wednesday in a catch-up game, defeating Bankstown Berries FC 2-0. Saints Stevan Ilic scored two second-half goals.
It was the team’s second win for the season.
