The eagerly-sought upgrade of Arncliffe railway station is set to get under way.
It will provide four new lifts, two family accessible toilets, two new accessible parking spaces, upgraded CCTV and an improved transport interchange on Firth Street with sheltered bus stops and a new kiss and ride zone.
Former transport minister Gladys Berejiklian announced the project in May last year, saying work would start by the end of 2015.
Andrew Constance, who took over that role after the March 28 election, said site establishment would occur in coming weeks, with major construction to start in the middle of this year.”
Work would be completed in early 2017, he said.
Mr Constance said, as a result of community and stakeholder feedback on exhibited plans, a number of improvements had been made to the design.
They included reducing the height of the lift shafts, he said.
Mr Constance said the approved plan considered the existing heritage values of the station and would retain the existing platform buildings, booking office and footbridge, he said.
Mr Constance said Arncliffe residents would also benefit from a new pedestrian link underneath the rail line, between Arncliffe Street and Wollongong Road, with early works under way.
‘‘Customers using nearby Rockdale station have an extra 24 parking spaces from an extension of the Geeves Lane commuter car park,’’ he said.
