Sutherland Shire Council has refused an application by Cronulla RSL Memorial Club Ltd to extend its operating hours.
The club had applied to extend the operating hours of its outdoor gaming room to 3am on Saturdays and Sundays from its 12.30am finishing time.
The council’s independent hearing and assessment panel (IHAP) recommended that the extension should not be agreed to unless the club could demonstrate conclusively that it was complying with measures to reduce adverse social impacts through acoustic works as outlined in its plan of management.
The council staff recommendation to IHAP was for approval for a 12-month trial period.
A previous council assessment report said that the level of noise coming from the gaming area was within acceptable limits.
The police had no objections to the extension of hours.
Cronulla RSL Club chief executive officer John Waters said people had been misinformed about the application to modify its operation hours.
‘‘There was confusion between the alfresco deck and the outdoor gaming room,’’ he said.
‘‘The outdoor gaming room which is subject of the application, is enclosed by a 3.5 metre wall.
‘‘There is no application to extend the hours of the alfresco deck which will still close at 11pm.’’
Mr Waters said the club had still to be notified officially of the council’s decision.
‘‘When we have received an official notification of the reasons of the council’s decision, we will then consider our options,’’ he said.
