More on impounding
Stray cats and dogs are administered by relevant local councils in the "area of control" or boundary of which they serve and is regulated by the NSW Companion Animals Act 1998 and the NSW Impounding Act 1993, not the NSW Office of Local Government Act (dogs and cats - lost and found).
This is not a complimentary service but rather a service with a fee and it is administered by the councils.
Council pounds do accept animals that are seized by the public and if the animal is microchipped and registered — in the interest of responsible pet ownership — they scan the animal and then contact the registered owner so the animal can be retrieved.
There is a fee for this service borne by the owner.
