ROCKDALE Council has voted to nominate Cooks Cove as a priority precinct to kick-start a decision on the site.
The project has a long history after having failed to progress after 14 years.
UrbanGrowth NSW is now responsible for development of the site after the Cooks Cove Development Corporation was dissolved in August 2013.
In September 2014, the state government rejected an unsolicited proposal from Kogarah Golf Club that included the relocation and construction of a new St George Soccer Stadium and the replacement of the previous trade and technology zone with a mixed use precinct including about 5000 residential apartments.
The council in March wrote to Premier Mike Baird and the relevant planning ministers calling on them to expedite the planning and rezoning of the site.
With a decision yet to be made, the council at its May 7 meeting resolved to nominate the site as a priority precinct.
The priority precinct program, through the Department of Planning and Infrastructure, aims to put more homes in places close to transport and infrastructure.
A department spokeswoman said it would consider the proposal.
"The department understands that Rockdale Council passed a resolution last Wednesday for a submission to be made to the Department of Planning and Environment for the site to be considered a priority precinct," she said.
"The department will consider the proposal when received formally. The department is not considering any other proposals."
UrbanGrowth NSW did not respond to a request for comment.
