Peace at night
As one of the 21 who objected to the development application, I applaud Sutherland Shire Council's decision.
My objections were always to the noise and antisocial behaviour of the RSL's patrons as they enter and exit the club late at night.
It is often extremely disturbing with loud conversations, screaming, drunken scuffles and slamming of car doors. It was not unreasonable to expect these to get worse with the trading hours being extended to 3am on the cub's and Cronulla's two busiest nights.
In support of this point, I note the club's CEO advised the Independent Hearing and Assessment Panel that the club did not comply with the council's condition for the original DA approval, that their security patrol the boundary of the club with Cronulla Park, because he would not put the security staff at risk.
The club is also located in an "intermediate activity area", as designated in council's 2006 development control plan, which is supposed to be limited for late trading to 12am as a maximum.
This area in which the club is located is also mainly residential with the club surrounded by hundreds of home units.
David Stuart New, Cronulla
Great to see Sutherland Shire Council has taken the residents' concerns into account and knocked back Cronulla RSL's application for an extension of trading hours to 3am.
The reason given was the RSL's inability to manage the noise, but did not mention managing the drunken hooligans leaving the club destroying property and keeping residents awake.
Guess this will be another fight in the future if the RSL applies again.
